Eastern Hay Scented Fern – Dennstaedtia punctilobula


For those of you hoping to transform unproductive lawn into a peaceful woodland garden, Eastern Hay-Scented Fern is a great choice, because it will spread nicely. The name comes from the fact that if you crush it between your fingers, it’s said to smell like fresh hay. It’s lacy fronds grow to 1.5 to 2 feet and spread out about a foot, and you’ll notice they’ll align to face the sun. It’s a common fern to find along trails throughout our region, and provides shelter to birds, bugs, and other beneficial wildlife. It doesn’t attract deer.
